f(x)=3x^2 and g(x)=4x^3+1

(f*g)(x) = (3x^2)(4x^3 + 1)

(f*g)(x) = 12x^5 + 3x^2

The term with highest degree is the first term 12x^5, so the degree of the product is 5.
