The land that the tribes inhabited was fertile and the southern settlers were wanting to move to these areas. In addition, since Georgia was fighting with the Cherokee tribes over a land claim at the time, President Jackson was hoping that moving them out of the south would resolve this issue. The discovery of gold in Georgia in 1828 expedited the process, as well.
