Distribute the outside terms through the terms inside the parenthesis.

2(x - 4) + 7 = 3

2x - 8 + 7 = 3

Combine like terms.

2x - 1 = 3

Add 1 to both sides of the equation.

2x = 4

Divide both sides by 2.

x = 2
