Why did many northerners and southerners eagerly rush the war?

The northerners and southerners were eager to rush the war because both wanted to expand and explore more territories. They to go westward and expand to have rich mines in California, New Mexico, Virginia and Colorado.   They also wanted more fertile lands for farms.
