The wealthiest households earned 50 times what the ordinary American family did. However, these households did not consume 50 times as much food or buy 50 times as many vehicles, radios, or ovens. The wealthy obviously spend a lot of money on consumer goods. The issue was that the wealthy few did not spend enough to keep the economy humming.
