Joseph put candles on a cake. He lit 1/4 of those candles then he lit five more of the candles on the cake. As a result, exactly 1/3 of the candles on the cake were lit. What was the total number of candles on the cake?

1/4x + 5 = 1/3x
5 = 1/3x - 1/4x
5 = 4/12x - 3/12x
5 = 1/12x
5 * 12 = x
60 = x....there were 60 candles on the cake
