Since the sea was so close to Greek cities, it made sense that fishing was a big part of the economy.  Trade is very easy if the sea is easily accessible, therefore merchant ships were often used for trade.  Culture and myth were widely influenced by the presence of the sea in stories.  An example is the Greek god of the sea, Poseidon.
