Muscles contract in different parts of your arm when the brain signals them to through the nervous system. The tightening and loosening of the muscles causes the arm to move when you want it to. If you watch your arm move up and down, you can see your muscles moving (primarily in the biceps), which is the muscle contacting to lift the arm.
