Calcium is more reactive than magnesium. This is because calcium electropositivily is stronger than magnesium. What this means is that calcium being a more reactive metal than magnesium have a greater tendency to lose valence electrons than a less reactive metal compared to magnesium. Here is a table of the reactivity series of metals.
