Because 6 times 9 is 54, To make it longer they just multiplied then added.  They multiplied 6 times 5 which is 30 then multiplied 6 times 4 then added the two which equal 54.

But 9 =5 +4

6(9) = 6(5 + 4)

By using distributive property

6(9) = 6(5) + 6(4)

This is the same as the question.
