think of this as finding the area of a box. if each side of the box is one foot long, or 12 inches long, you need to multiply length times width to find the square inches. in this case it would look like:

A= 12in x 12in

12in x 12in = 144in^2

A = 144 in^2

therefore there are 144 square inches in one square foot.
