Comets are formed of  icy particles, carbon dioxide, ammonia, methane etc. Comets have a solid nucleus, which contains mostly ice and dirt. A comet consists of a coma and a tail. There have a  trail of debris behind the comets  that can lead to meteor showers on the earth. Comets orbit the sun on a highly elliptical path. They can orbit the sun for hundreds and thousands of years.
